Warning to all Young Enterprise Companies

We have been advised that a potential scam is being attempted, where a Young Enterprise company was approached and offered an over-generous offer for a large quantity of their stock (£1000 for 100 baseball caps). The excess money could then be donated to charity. We are told that this was featured on the BBC Watchdog programme which showed this being used on other charitable organisations. The payment by cheque will not clear and the company will lose out in the transaction.

Message from New Chairman. YE.UK.
I am delighted to have been elected to the Chairmanship of the Young Enterprise UK Board.
YE is already a highly successful organisation engaging record numbers of young people in enterprise activities. Our ambition is to reach significantly more students each year with our comprehensive range of enterprise programmes.
I am looking forward to playing my part with UK Board colleagues to build on the success of our new YE Regional structure and to achieving our ambitious vision. At national level I shall be focusing on the engagement of business leaders as champions for our mission, promoting YE to business and Government.
There is much to look forward to in this year but I am particularly keen to meet the young finalists at the HSBC Innovation Awards in July and experience first hand their enthusiasm and enterprise. I also hope to meet many of you in the YE volunteer and staff network in the coming months. In the meantime I wish everyone a successful year.
Mike Geoghegan

The Mid Sussex Area Young Enterprise Trade Fair

The Mid Sussex area Young Enterprise Trade fair was held at the market place Shopping Centre in Burgess Hill on Saturday 6th December. This coincided with the town's Christmas shopping spectacular and thanks to the shopping centre mangement the YE companies took centre stage at the heart of the main shopping mall. Ten YE companies took part, representing Ardingly College, Burgess Hill School for Girls, Haywards heath College, Hurstpierpoint College, Warden Park School and Worth School. Goods on sale included T shirts, memory sticks, jewellery, scarves, handwarmers and ornaments. Others were offering services such as children's parties, a fashion show, and dinner parties and waitressing. Lucky dips, face painting and children's colouring books added to the fun of the day.

A competition was held for the best company and trade stand. This was extremely close and was won by Bobo and Marties from Haywards Heath College, who arrange children's parties. Close behind in joint second place were D-Zines form Ardingly College (jewellery) and BYE from Worth School (T shirts). Everyone traded very successfuly on the day and it was a great learning experience for those taking part."

Project Business comes to Seaford

On Friday 23 May 2003 Project Business arrived at Seaford Head Community College. All 250 Y9 students took part on the Upper School site, which had been prepared the evening before. Rebecca Vine of Young Enterprise had trained all the 18 volunteers from local businesses, prepared all the materials for those volunteers, as well as bring lots prizes for the students.

A Business Enterprise activity has been an annual event for Y9 students
since 1990 when the Department of Vocational Education (DOVE) was formed, under the leadership of the current Head of Department Mike Hemmings. It has taken different shapes over the years ranging from a paperwork exercise constructing a business plan for an imaginary company, to making artefacts to sell and providing services at a Summer Fair. All of these activities have always been successful, and students have enjoyed them, but this year's change to Project Business resulted in the best yet, by quite a long way.The vast majority of students enjoyed it and said so, and the tutors were extremely happy with it. Thanks to all the volunteers, and to the representatives from Young Enterprise, especially Rebecca. Well done!
Mike Hemmings. Seaford Head Community College.
